It’s time to open your Okoboji lake home, but that doesn’t mean it has to be all work and no play. While some tasks are essential, not everything needs to be done at once. To help you enjoy more time relaxing on the deck, we’ve put together a simple checklist of must-do tasks so you can make the most of your long weekend.

Before You Leave

Avoid extra trips to the hardware store by making sure you’re prepared ahead of time.

  • Turn on essential services. Ensure electricity, water, and other necessary utilities are activated before you arrive.
  • Check insurance documents. Have your home, boat, and trailer insurance details on hand.
  • Gather keys. Ensure you have all necessary keys for doors, sheds, and boats.
  • Pack a tool kit. Include essentials for any minor repairs.
  • Bring cleaning supplies. Even if it’s just wiping down furniture, you’ll need the right materials.
  • Charge batteries and pack filters. Check and pack anything you might need for the weekend.

On Arrival

After months away, your lake house may need a thorough check before you settle in.

  • Inspect the exterior. Check power lines, phone lines, chimneys, decks, docks, windows, and structural supports.
  • Check for signs of pests or water damage. Look inside cupboards and along walls for evidence of mice or leaks.

Tuning Up

Take care of basic maintenance tasks to ensure a safe and comfortable season.

  • Replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are fully charged.
  • Clean out gutters and remove any debris.
  • Trim branches that may have grown too close to your home.
  • Replace filters in HVAC systems and appliances as needed.

Turning on the Water

If you use a lake pump system, follow these steps:

  • Inspect lines for damage.
  • Replace the pump filter.
  • Prime the pump.
  • Open a cold-water tap and ensure the cold-water valve to your hot water tank is closed.
  • Switch on the water pump.
  • Open all valves and let water run to remove air.
  • Check for leaks.

Turning on the Hot Water

Before heating water, make sure the tank is full to avoid damage.

  • Ensure the hot water tank is off.
  • Connect a hose to the drainage valve and run it outside.
  • Open a hot water tap and close the drainage valve.
  • Turn on the cold water intake to fill the tank.
  • Once water flows steadily from the tap, the tank is full.
  • Turn on the hot water system and check for leaks.

Cleaning the Property

  • Interior: Dust, vacuum, mop, and freshen up linens.
  • Exterior: Rake leaves, clean windows, power wash surfaces, and inspect docks for damage.
  • Boathouse & Equipment: Clean boats, kayaks, canoes, and life jackets to remove dust and cobwebs.

Stocking Up

  • Bring essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies.
  • Check your first aid kit and replenish any necessary items.
  • Stock up on groceries before heading out, especially if stores are far away.

Ongoing Property Maintenance

To keep your lake home in great shape all season:

  • Service the HVAC system and replace air filters.
  • Check screens for holes to keep bugs out while enjoying the breeze.
  • Inspect fireplaces and chimneys to ensure they are safe to use.
  • Maintain the yard and dock by removing fallen branches and keeping pathways clear.

Once all the hard work is done, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the lake. Whether it’s a peaceful morning on the dock or an evening by the fire, your well-prepared lakefront home will be the perfect retreat for the season ahead.
